Lingual Learners was founded because of a common desire to create a community of Spanish-speaking peers for our children. We offer classes, tutoring and summer camp experiences for children ages 3 through high school, providing exciting hands-on projects, academically age-appropriate topics, and engaging cultural content to make learning a language more than just about words and grammar, but rather to spend time in a community while we develop our language skills.
We meet at First Evangelical Covenant Church located at 1933 Tremont BLVD NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. Please do not contact the church in regards to Lingual Learners. For 2023-2024, classes are held on Tuesdays for all ages.
During the school year, we offer elementary students a unique and rigorous Spanish immersion experience. Through the process of sharing meaningful time in Spanish with friends, coupled with well-planned lessons in an immersion setting, your child will gain a greater understanding and love of the Spanish language and culture. Our classroom time focuses initially on building routines and teaching comprehension strategies so that students can function in an all-Spanish environment. We design thematic units around purposeful content so that students are engaging in age-appropriate curriculum while learning Spanish. Spanish is the method through which we study subjects rather than the direct subject of study.
For our beginning middle and high school students, we are excited to offer on-site classes where we focus on providing lots of “comprehensible input” (CI) – reading and listening opportunities of which students can understand 90%. Units focus on co-creating stories, reading about culture from the Spanish-speaking world, doing fun MovieTalks (teacher narrates short videos using CI), and using the story outlines to speak and write in their own ideas. English is strategically used in these upper-age classes to explain grammar (although minimally), clarify new vocabulary, determine if students comprehend the input, and connect with students. We continue this learning at home by providing more input in the form of an online app (Garbanzo), readings, grammar practice and vocabulary review.
